Thanks! As I said, I noticed a number of other films also seemed to be cropped top and/or bottom. Most would have been shot Academy Ratio and should therefore fill the screen, but some are showing at about 1:1.66, which would generally only result from cropping. Would it be helpful if I kept a list as I browse and post it?

Sure. I wonder if some of these were shot full aperture -- many were shot silent for use as process plates, and some were of course shot in the silent era. That would bring the ratio a bit closer to 1:1.66.

Actually, full aperture is 1.33:1.
