First, familiarize yourself with copyright terms. There's an excellent guide at the Copyright Information Center at Cornell University.
http://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfmOnce you've done this, you can check for registration. There are two places to do this: The US Copyright Office (
http://www.copyright.gov/records/) and here in the Archive. There are US copyright renewal lists for every year from 1950 to 1978 in the open source texts collection.
That's the hard way. The easy way is to post a question in the Feature Films forum. There are people there who are helpful and knowledgable and can quickly tell you if the work in question is actually PD.
